Contemporary Portraiture and Techniques

This workshop is virtual via Zoom.

Dates: Thursdays, May 13 – June 3, 2021

Time: 7 – 9 p.m.

Instructor: Nicole Troup

Cost: WCMFA Members $40, General public $50

If you have always wanted to paint with acrylics, but find that the fast drying time is difficult to work with or the painting dries before you have time to blend, then this workshop will be very beneficial. Students will be using a special acrylic brand called Open Slow-Drying Acrylics by Golden, which will allow for an extended wet time to blend paint on the canvas. Students will also be taught special techniques to blend paint and create gradient shading after the paint surface has already dried. We will begin the workshop with an overview of materials and working process and then follow with instruction and demonstrations that place an emphasis on contemporary portrait techniques and approaches, proportions, massing in the lights and darks, value relationships, shading, blending, use of edges, and techniques such as dry-brushing, wet on wet, glazing and more.

A photo reference will be sent to the students to use for the portrait painting. Class discussions and critiques will include positive and constructive feedback to improve students’ work and how to accurately judge values, edges, and forms within your photo. A 5-10 minute break will be given halfway through each class.

Students will need to provide their own supplies. Download the supplies list here.
