The Sincerest Form: Master Art Copyists
January 18 – May 11, 2025
*no copyists in the galleries on Saturday, April 26 or Sunday, April 27 due to our Art in Bloom Event
This special installation will feature the work of a number of regionally based artist who are officially “master copyists” with authorization to copy paintings in the National Gallery’s collection. Here, the copyists will show examples of their work, and also create some new copies based on our collection. The exhibition will delve into the idea of copying throughout art history—Degas and Manet famously met while both were making copies at the Louvre. Does copying advance art? What pieces in our collection are copies? How is this history relevant today? Part of this exhibition will include painting demonstrations and an installation that evokes a traditional artist’s studio. This special installation has been organized by the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the artists of the Master Copyists group and has been generously supported by Raymond James, Inc.
